Why does the Bausch & Lomb Stellaris Phaco Machine say VFM11 System priming has failed?

The answer

VFM11 means “System priming has failed.” Check the irrigation and aspiration tubing for leaks and confirm that the test chamber seals tightly around the handpiece, then try priming again; if it fails again, load a new pack.

VFM11 indicates a failed priming operation. The first checks are the disposable fluid path and the handpiece test chamber, rather than the surgical settings.

  1. Inspect the irrigation and aspiration tubing connections for leaks.
  2. Check that the test chamber is forming a tight seal around the handpiece.
  3. Try priming the system again.
  4. If priming fails again, eject the cassette, load a new pack, and try priming again.

The manual gives a separate escalation for a persistent problem: call the product service representative. This message is different from VFM09, which only means that priming has not yet been completed and directs the user to select Setup and Prime.

Do not treat a failed prime as a completed prime; the system must successfully complete priming before proceeding.
