Why does the Topcon Triton show a different OCT scan size after I change the capture icon?

Scan Size is the physical length or range being scanned, while Scan Resolution is the amount of data read; higher resolution gives a more detailed tomogram but increases processing time and saved-data size.

The capture icon determines both the scan geometry and its default dimensions. For example, the manual lists 3D: Macula as 3.0×3.0mm with 512×256 resolution in the setting-menu protocol, while 3D Wide (H) uses 12.0×9.0mm with 512×128. These are not interchangeable descriptions of the same setting.

Scan Size means the length or range to scan. Scan Resolution means the data quantity read by scanning: for a 3D scan, it is the data for each side of the length-by-width range. Raising resolution can produce a more detailed tomogram, but it also increases the amount of data, processing time, and saved-data size.

Changing the capture icon can therefore change the apparent scan area even when the patient and alignment have not changed. Check the selected icon and its protocol values before comparing scans acquired with different patterns.
